Hebrew Word Study – Holy & Profane

But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written: “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16

The Hebrew word for HOLY is qodesh, and means apartness, sacredness. In this case the set apart are the Believers in Christ, separated unto holiness, very much like the Sabbath, the 7th day of the week was separated unto the Lord, so that what was done in the others, were not done on this special day.

The law that governed the Sabbath called for rest to be done on that day, so that we could regain our strength, unlike the other 6 days where there were no restrictions on how long we toiled or labored. God set the example first. He rested and was refreshed Ex 31:17 so that we could follow Ex 23:12. And spoke against those who ignored His Law.

Those who are set apart as holy unto the Lord also has laws that govern their conduct just like the Sabbath has, so that what is done in others will not be done in them. Those laws are designed to train them to look like God in their actions. And it is in doing them that we come to be identified as those who belong to the Lord. There are restrictions like the sabbath day has, and God expects us to abide by His law of holiness.

When something is holy it is not PROFANE/polluted. The Hebrew word for PROFANE is chalal, and means pollute & defile, which came from the word chol, that means profaneness & commonness.

Pollution comes when something is changed from its original form, mixed, or cross contaminated by other substances by touch or other things in the atmosphere.

When you become born again you became holy and is not expected to behave like those who are common or polluted/profane. Holiness must be seen in our conduct. Common just means a lifestyle and behavior before separated as holy unto the Lord. So those who are not saved.

Even though we are in the world, our behavior, our way of doing things must not mirror the rest of the world. It must not look like it’s common to all men, because different laws govern those that God has set apart for Himself. Our behavior must mirror His

The word Law has become a taboo for some of us, but Law simply means that a set of guidelines, prescribed ways, commands, and in some cases, judgments are in place/in effect, for our benefit. Sometimes spiritually, meaning we cannot see them even though we understand they are there because of outcomes. But other times both spiritually and naturally, we know because they were written for us to see and follow. But everything, good & evil, begins first, in the spiritual realms. This means Laws are always in place.

The entire bible is filled with examples of what holiness should look like that we are to practice. The New Testament has placed a lot of emphasis on reminding us of what the Old Testament has already said.
